Meeting: Florida Redistricting with Geographers: Public Engagement and Impact
Date and Time: October 4th, 2021 1:00pm - 2:30pm ET
Like most efforts that have political implications in Florida, the decennial task of redistricting is high stakes. Questions of voting rights, funding for education, environmental protections, and any number of other real practical matters for people in the state will be shaped by the outcomes of this process. It’s vital that as many voices as possible be heard as the legislature undertakes this work, geographers included. Our panel will provide participants with the fundamentals of redistricting in Florida and explore ways for public participation in this process. The presentations will include political process expertise, advocacy guidance, demonstration of technologies provided for public input, and context on the valuable role professional geographers and geography enthusiasts can play in Florida’s redistricting process. Participants will be equipped with the basics of legislative process, current movements in the state, and opportunities for individual input they need to impact the redistricting effort in Florida.
