Meeting: Michigan Redistricting with Geographers: Voting Rights and Population Statistics
Date and Time: September 22nd, 2021 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm ET
How will Michigan draw new legislative districts while keeping voting rights a top priority? How will these new districts reflect recent population change? And what can you do to make your voice count as the new maps are drawn? This panel brings together a geographer, a demographer, a voting rights expert, and one of Michigan’s top election attorneys. The group will discuss voting rights laws in Michigan, the recently released Census population data, and what implications these have in the state’s redistricting process. When it comes to the fight for fair redistricting, there is no one better equipped than a geographer. By activating our collective power as a community and pressing to have a geographer in the room in every state, we can set new expectations this year and show why geospatial thinkers are indispensable.
